Tabsafe: Tab Backup and Restore After a Crash or Update: Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-10-19
Who we are
Tabsafe is a browser extension published by Exochard, the publisher named on its store listings. Exochard decides what data Tabsafe handles and is responsible for it. Contact: [email protected]
This policy covers the extension, the shared Exochard API it talks to (exotools-api.exochard.workers.dev, hosted on Cloudflare; older versions call gigscope-api.exochard.workers.dev, which forwards to it) and the website https://tabsafe.pages.dev and its roadmap and goodbye pages. It describes every kind of data Tabsafe collects, how it is used, where it is stored, how long it is kept and who it is shared with. Tabsafe collects no data that is not listed here.
What the extension does
Tabsafe saves snapshots of your open windows and tabs, keeps a log of closed tabs and lets you restore them. It uses the browser's tabs permission to read the address and title of your open tabs. It does not read the content of the pages you visit, and private (incognito) windows are never recorded. It can also write backup files to your Downloads folder and, in Edge, to a folder you choose. If you turn on Drive sync (Pro), it keeps an encrypted copy of your library in the hidden app folder of your own Google Drive.
Summary of the data Tabsafe handles
- Authentication information: your Pro license key, sent to the API to check it, only when you activate Pro and then at most once a day.
- Your library, only if you turn on Drive sync: encrypted in your browser under a passphrase you choose, then stored in the hidden app folder of your own Google Drive. We receive nothing.
Tabsafe does not collect your browsing history, health, financial or payment information, location, or website content. The addresses and titles of your tabs, your snapshots, sessions and collections stay in your browser and are never sent to us. They leave it only in the files you save and, if you turn on Drive sync, encrypted, to your own Google Drive. It does not sell data, does not use it for advertising, and does not use it to decide creditworthiness or for any purpose unrelated to saving and restoring your tabs.
Data stored only in your browser
These stay in your browser's extension storage and are never sent to us:
- Snapshots of your open windows and tabs (addresses, titles, pinned state, tab groups), the closed-tab log, named sessions, collections, sessions you import, the notes you write on saved tabs, and your settings.
- The list of open tabs the closed-tab log is built from, the recovery points that protect a session from a restart or update, and any entry the extension could not read, kept aside instead of deleted.
- Snapshots are stored for up to 365 days on every plan, and the closed-tab log for up to 365 days or 5,000 entries. Free lists the last 14 days; Pro lists all of it. If Pro ends, older entries stay stored and are listed again when Pro returns.
- Your Pro license key, the pass type and end date, and the time it was last checked, if you activate Pro, the start and end dates of the 7-day trial, and the random install id.
- The list of backup files Tabsafe wrote (name, time, result), the last backup time, and the weekly tab clutter report.
- Restore and rehearsal records: the restore in progress, the rehearsal in progress, and a Rehearsed on date and missing count filed under the digest of each backup file you rehearsed.
- Counts of what you did on this browser (installs, restores), which cards you dismissed or were shown, a what's-new flag and the panel view you last used.
- The folder you chose for backups, kept as a browser folder handle in the extension's own database (IndexedDB). Tabsafe cannot reach any other folder.
- The safety record: the result of each snapshot read-back check (time, tab and window counts, passed or not) and of each backup file check, and the name and major version of your browser, which lets Tabsafe keep the session from before a browser update.
- Private (incognito) windows are never recorded.
Backup files are saved to a Tabsafe folder inside your own Downloads folder, when you press Back up now or on the schedule Tabsafe keeps: weekly, or daily with Pro. Tabsafe does not upload them anywhere, and they are not deleted with the extension. They are yours to delete, or set Keep the newest in Options to have Tabsafe remove its own older scheduled files.
Backup folder (Edge): when you choose a folder, Tabsafe writes the same backup files there on each backup and reads them back to check them. It removes its own tabsafe-backup files there only if you set a limit by count or by age. Pick up newest reads the newest file in that folder and adds what this browser lacks. The folder handle stays on your computer. Encrypted export saves a file under a passphrase you type; the passphrase is never stored or sent.
Uninstalling the extension deletes everything it stored.
Permissions
- tabs: read tab addresses and titles to save snapshots.
- storage and unlimitedStorage: keep snapshots and the closed-tab log.
- alarms: take a snapshot every 15 minutes and run scheduled backups.
- tabGroups: save and restore tab groups (browsers that have them).
- sidePanel: show the Tabsafe panel (browsers that have it).
- offscreen: write the backup file, since the background worker cannot make file links (browsers that have it).
- downloads: write backup files.
- contextMenus: the Send to list entries on a page, a tab and the toolbar button.
- identity and access to www.googleapis.com (both optional): asked for only when you turn on Drive sync, to sign in to Google and reach your Drive app folder.
- A chosen backup folder is not a permission: the browser asks you to pick it and may ask again to allow writing.
Data that leaves your browser, and why
License check (authentication information)
- What is sent: your license key, the product name, and a random id made when the extension was installed. No tab addresses, titles or other browsing data are sent. The id identifies nothing but that installation.
- When: when you activate Pro, and at most once a day after that while a pass is active. The 7-day trial starts and ends on your device and sends nothing.
- Why: to confirm the key is valid with Payhip, the seller of record for Pro passes, and to count each browser once, so entering the key again in the same browser never takes a second of its 3 seats.
- Where it is kept: the API keeps the list of install ids that use a key, filed under a one-way hash of the product name and key; the key itself is not stored. The list expires 400 days after the key was last checked.
Drive sync (optional, Pro, in builds that include it)
- What is sent: your library (sessions, collections and their tab addresses and titles), encrypted in your browser with a key made from your passphrase, to the hidden app folder of your own Google Drive, and the Google sign-in token the browser holds for that folder. The passphrase is never stored on disk or sent.
- When: only after you turn Drive sync on, about every 15 minutes while it is on, and when you press Sync now.
- Why: to keep your library on every browser you sign in to. Tabsafe's servers are not involved; the traffic goes between your browser and Google.
- Where it is kept: in your Google Drive app folder, which only Tabsafe can read and which you can delete with Turn off and delete the Drive copy. Google handles that data under its own privacy policy.
Uninstall page
When you remove the extension, the browser opens https://tabsafe.pages.dev/bye. The address carries nothing: no version, no id. The page sends nothing; it offers a link to leave a review in the store of the browser you use, an email link and a reinstall link.
Roadmap page
The roadmap page at https://tabsafe.pages.dev/roadmap shows planned and shipped changes. Loading it asks the API for the list of items and sends only the product name. The website sets no cookies. It counts page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies and keeps nothing that identifies you.
When you buy a pass
You buy Pro on Payhip, which handles the payment, your name, your email address and the license key under its own privacy policy. Payhip then sends the API a notice about the order. The API keeps the product code of the pass, the price, the currency, whether a coupon was used and the order number for 35 days, plus a daily count of sales for 400 days. Your name, email address, network address and license key are not stored by us.
Who we share data with
We share data only with the services that run Tabsafe, and only for the purposes above:
- Payhip, to check license keys and sell passes: https://payhip.com/privacy
- Cloudflare, which hosts the API and the website: https://www.cloudflare.com/privacypolicy/
We do not sell or rent data, do not share it with advertisers or data brokers, and do not transfer it for any other purpose. We would disclose data only if the law requires it.
How data is protected
All traffic between the extension, the API and the services above uses HTTPS. The API keeps license keys and network addresses only as one-way hashes.
Your choices and rights
- See or delete your local data: uninstall the extension, or clear its data in your browser's extension settings. Backup files in your Downloads folder are yours to delete.
- Ask a question or free a license seat: write to us at [email protected]. We answer within 30 days.
- If you live in the EU or the UK, you also have the rights the GDPR gives you, including the right to complain to your data protection authority.
Children
Tabsafe is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
When this policy changes, we update this page and the date at the top. A change that adds a new kind of data ships only with an extension update whose store listing describes it.
